Travel guide

Planning a trip to Vietnam

Vietnam stretches about 1,650 km from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, so most trips pick a region or use domestic flights. With 7 to 14 days you can see the north's bays and mountains, the old towns of the centre and the Mekong Delta.

Best time to go

There's no single best month, because each region has its own weather.

In the north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa), March to May and September to November are the most pleasant. Winter is cool and often grey, and summer is hot and wet.

In the centre (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang), February to August is usually dry. September to December is the rainy and typhoon season.

In the south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong, Phu Quoc), December to April is dry, and May to November brings short tropical downpours.

Where to go

Before you go

  • Canadians need a visa. You can apply online for an e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, through Vietnam's official e-visa website.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you leave Vietnam.
  • The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards work in most hotels; carry cash for markets and street food.
  • Check the latest rules on travel.gc.ca.

Getting around

Flights between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City take 1 to 2 hours. Our longer packages include these flights, plus the cruises, drivers and transfers listed on each trip page.

Vietnam: common questions

How many days do I need in Vietnam?

A week works for a north-to-south trip with two flights, like our 7-day highlights trip. With 10 to 14 days you can add Sapa, Ha Giang or Phu Quoc.

Is Vietnam good for a first trip to Asia?

Yes. The main routes are well set up for visitors, and the food, scenery and prices make it very popular.

Can I combine Vietnam with Cambodia?

Yes. Ho Chi Minh City is a short flight or a day's journey from Phnom Penh. Ask us to join trips together.
