Visiting Koh Samui and the Gulf islands

Koh Samui is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and the base for Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. It has its own airport, which makes it easy to pair with Bangkok.

Best time to go

The Gulf has a different weather pattern from Phuket. The heaviest rain usually falls from about October to December. January to August is generally drier, which makes Samui a good choice in the months when the Andaman coast is rainy.

What to see

  • Ang Thong Marine Park: over 40 islands, the Emerald Lake and a steep viewpoint.
  • Koh Nang Yuan and Koh Tao for snorkelling.
  • Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem and the Fisherman's Village in Bophut.
  • Koh Phangan's quieter beaches, away from the Full Moon Party.

Getting there

Flights from Bangkok to Samui (USM) take about an hour. Ferries link Samui to Koh Phangan in under an hour and to Koh Tao in about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the boat.

Koh Samui: common questions

Can I swim in Ang Thong's Emerald Lake?

No. The lake is protected, so you view it from a walkway and platform.

Should I stay on Samui, Phangan or Tao?

Samui has the most hotels and the airport. Phangan is more laid-back, and Tao is for divers and snorkellers. Our 5-day Gulf islands trip includes all three.
