Visiting Siem Reap and Angkor

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with hundreds of temples built by the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries. Most visitors stay two to three days.

Best time to go

November to February is dry and the least hot, and it's also the busiest time. March to May is very hot, so plan temple visits for early morning. From May to October, rain usually comes in the afternoon and the temples are greener and quieter.

What to see

  • Angkor Wat, especially at sunrise.
  • The smiling stone faces of the Bayon in Angkor Thom.
  • Ta Prohm, where tree roots grow over the walls.
  • Banteay Srei's pink sandstone carvings, about an hour north.
  • Phnom Kulen's waterfall and the Tonle Sap stilt villages, on our 3-day trip.

Temple tickets and dress code

You need an Angkor pass, sold for 1, 3 or 7 days, to enter the main temples. Phnom Kulen needs a separate ticket.

Cover your shoulders and knees. The upper level of Angkor Wat is strict about this.

How many days do I need for Angkor?

Two days covers the main temples at a comfortable pace. Three days lets you add Banteay Srei, Kulen or the Tonle Sap.

Is sunrise at Angkor Wat worth it?

Yes, if you don't mind a very early start. It's popular, so arrive early for a good spot by the reflecting pools.

How far is the airport from Siem Reap?

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) is about an hour's drive from town. Our packages include the transfer.
