Travel guide
Visiting Phnom Penh
Cambodia's capital sits where the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers meet. It combines royal palaces and busy markets with sites that tell the story of the Khmer Rouge years.
Best time to go
November to February is the most comfortable. March to May is hot, and from May to October there are afternoon showers.
What to see
- The Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. Cover your shoulders and knees.
- The National Museum and Wat Phnom.
- Central Market and the Russian Market.
- The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek memorial, which are moving and can be upsetting.
- A sunset boat on the river.
Getting there
Phnom Penh's new Techo International Airport (KTI) opened in 2025. Siem Reap is about 6 hours by road or a short flight, and Kampot is about 3 hours south.
Phnom Penh: common questions
How many days should I spend in Phnom Penh?
Two days is enough for the palace, the museums and the markets. Our 2-day trip includes a sunset cruise.
Are the Khmer Rouge sites suitable for children?
The content is graphic and emotional. Many families with young children choose to skip them.
