Travel guide

Visiting Hue and Phong Nha

Hue was Vietnam's imperial capital under the Nguyen dynasty, and its citadel and royal tombs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the north, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is famous for its huge caves.

Best time to go

February to August is the driest period. The rainy season, from about September to December, can close some caves and river trips.

What to see

  • The Imperial City and the tombs of Khai Dinh and Tu Duc.
  • Thien Mu Pagoda by dragon boat on the Perfume River.
  • The drive over the Hai Van Pass towards Hoi An.
  • Paradise Cave, and Phong Nha Cave by boat.

Getting there

Hue has its own airport, and Dong Hoi airport (VDH) is the closest to Phong Nha. Our 6-day central Vietnam trip runs one way with a private car.
