Planning a trip to Thailand

Thailand packs a lot into one trip: temples and street food in Bangkok, mountains and old cities in the north, and two very different island coasts in the south. Most first-time visitors spend 7 to 14 days and combine a city, the north and a beach.

Best time to go

November to February is the coolest and driest time in most of the country, and the busiest. March to May is very hot. June to October is the rainy season, with short, heavy downpours most afternoons, greener landscapes and lower prices.

The two coasts have different seasons. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is best from November to April. The Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) get most of their rain from about October to December and are usually good from January to August.

Where to go

  • Bangkok: the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, canals and day trips to Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi.
  • Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai: temples, mountains and ethical elephant sanctuaries.
  • Phuket and Krabi: limestone islands, Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay.
  • Koh Samui: the Gulf islands and Ang Thong Marine Park.
  • Pattaya: an easy beach break two hours from Bangkok.

Getting around

Domestic flights are the quickest way to link Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands; most take 1 to 1.5 hours. Ferries and speedboats connect the islands, and overnight trains run from Bangkok to the north and south.

Before you go

  • Canadian passports should be valid for at least 6 months when you arrive.
  • Canadians don't need a visa for a short tourist stay, but the number of days allowed has been changing. Check travel.gc.ca before you book flights.
  • Every traveller must fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arriving.
  • The currency is the Thai baht. Cards work in hotels and malls; carry cash for markets and small shops.
  • Temples and palaces ask you to cover your shoulders and knees.

Thailand: common questions

How many days do I need in Thailand?

A week is enough for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and one beach area if you fly between them. With 10 to 14 days you can add Chiang Rai, a second island or a slower pace.

Is Thailand good for a first trip to Southeast Asia?

Yes. Tourism is well set up, transport between the main areas is frequent, and it's easy to find English speakers in the places most visitors go.

Can I combine Thailand with Cambodia or Vietnam?

Yes. Bangkok has short flights to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Tell us your dates and we can join our trips into one plan.
