Travel guide

Visiting Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is northern Thailand's main city: a walled old town full of temples, surrounded by forested mountains. It's the base for elephant sanctuaries, Doi Inthanon, jungle treks and trips to Chiang Rai and Pai.

Best time to go

November to February brings warm days and cool nights, and it's the busiest season. Around February to April, farm burning can cause heavy haze in the north. June to October is green and rainy.

The Yi Peng lantern festival and Loy Krathong take place around the November full moon.

What to see

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, on the mountain above the city, best at sunset.
  • Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh in the Old City.
  • Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain, with waterfalls and royal pagodas.
  • An ethical elephant day with no riding.
  • The Sunday Walking Street and the Night Bazaar.

Getting there

Flights from Bangkok take about 1 hour 10 minutes, and there are overnight trains too. Chiang Rai is about 3 hours away by road, and Pai about 3 hours on a very winding mountain road.

Choosing an elephant experience

Look for places that don't offer riding or shows and that let elephants move and feed freely. Our elephant days are feeding and walking visits only.

Chiang Mai: common questions

How many days do I need in Chiang Mai?

Three days covers the Old City, Doi Suthep, an elephant day and Doi Inthanon. Add a day or two for Chiang Rai or a trek.

Can I visit Chiang Rai as a day trip from Chiang Mai?

Yes, but it's a long day, about 12 hours with around 6 hours of driving. The 2-day version is more relaxed and adds the Golden Triangle.

Is it cold in Chiang Mai?

Nights from December to February can be cool, and the mountaintops can be cold at dawn. Bring a light jacket for Doi Inthanon.
