Travel guide
Visiting Phuket
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the easiest base for the Andaman Sea. From here, boats go to Phi Phi and Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, and, in season, the Similan Islands.
Best time to go
November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and the most reliable boat trips. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher water. Some boat routes don't run then, and trips can be moved for safety.
The Similan Islands National Park is open only from October 15 to May 15.
What to see
- Phi Phi and Maya Bay. An early start helps you beat the crowds.
- Phang Nga Bay: sea caves, lagoons and James Bond Island.
- The Similan Islands for the clearest water and reefs.
- Phuket Old Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses.
- Big Buddha and the viewpoints above Kata and Karon.
Where to stay
- Patong: busy, with the most nightlife.
- Kata and Karon: long beaches and a calmer, family-friendly feel.
- Phuket Town: food, cafés and old streets, but no beach.
Phuket: common questions
Can you swim at Maya Bay?
No. Swimming has been banned at Maya Bay since it reopened in 2022 to protect the reef. You land at a pier on the back of the island and walk to the beach. The park also closes the bay for part of the low season.
Phuket or Krabi: which is better?
Phuket has more hotels, nightlife and boat choices. Krabi is smaller and quieter, with dramatic cliffs. Read our Phuket or Krabi guide.
How many days should I spend in Phuket?
Three to four days allows two boat trips and time on the beach. Our 4-day package is built around that.
