Visiting Krabi
Krabi province is known for tall limestone cliffs rising out of the sea. Ao Nang is the main base, Railay can only be reached by boat, and the Hong Islands and the 4 Islands are short boat rides away.
Best time to go
Like Phuket, Krabi is best from November to April. From May to October the sea is rougher and some island trips may be cancelled on the day.
What to see
- Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach, reached by longtail boat.
- The 4 Islands and the Tup Island sandbar at low tide.
- The Hong Island lagoon by kayak.
- Phi Phi, about 1.5 to 2 hours away by ferry.
- Khao Sok National Park and Cheow Lan Lake, a few hours inland.
Getting there
Krabi airport (KBV) has direct flights from Bangkok. Phuket is about 2.5 to 3 hours away by road, or you can go by ferry via Phi Phi, as on our Andaman island hopper.
Krabi: common questions
Is Railay on an island?
No. Railay is on the mainland, but cliffs cut it off from the roads, so you get there by longtail boat, about 15 minutes from Ao Nang.
How many days do I need in Krabi?
Three days is enough for two boat trips and some time at Railay.
