Travel guide

Visiting Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, off the south coast near Cambodia. It's the country's main beach escape, with west-coast sunsets and the An Thoi islands to the south.

Best time to go

November to April is dry, with calm seas. From May to October the rainy season brings rougher water, especially on the west coast.

What to do

  • Snorkelling and island-hopping around the An Thoi islands.
  • The Hon Thom cable car, one of the longest over the sea.
  • Sao Beach and sunset at Long Beach.
  • The Duong Dong night market.

Getting there

Direct flights from Hanoi take about 2 hours, and from Ho Chi Minh City about 1 hour. Phu Quoc also has some international flights.

Phu Quoc: common questions

Do I need a visa for Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc has a special rule. If you fly there directly from abroad without passing through another Vietnamese airport, you can usually stay up to 30 days without a visa. If you connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you need a Vietnam e-visa. Check the current rules before you book.

How many days do I need on Phu Quoc?

Three to four days is enough for a boat day, the cable car and some beach time.
