Visiting Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a small, relaxed city in Thailand's far north, best known for two modern temples: the all-white Wat Rong Khun and the Blue Temple. The Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong, is about an hour away.

Best time to go

November to February is cool and dry. The haze season, roughly February to April, can hide the mountain views. June to October is rainy but green.

What to see

  • Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.
  • Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple.
  • Baan Dam, the Black House museum of artist Thawan Duchanee.
  • The Golden Triangle viewpoint and a longtail boat on the Mekong.
  • The Saturday and Sunday walking street markets.

Getting there

Chiang Rai has its own airport with flights from Bangkok, and it's about 3 hours by road from Chiang Mai. Many travellers visit on a day trip or add a night on a northern package.

Chiang Rai: common questions

Is there a dress code at the White Temple?

Yes. Cover your shoulders and knees, as at other Thai temples.

Is one day enough for Chiang Rai?

One day is enough for the three main sights. Stay overnight if you want the Golden Triangle as well without a rushed day.
