Travel guide

Visiting Hanoi and Ninh Binh

Hanoi is Vietnam's capital and the start of most trips in the north. Two hours south, Ninh Binh's rice fields, limestone peaks and river caves are often called Ha Long Bay on land.

Best time to go

March to May and September to November are the most pleasant. December to February is cool and often grey, and June to August is hot and humid, with heavy showers. Ninh Binh's rice fields turn golden around late May to June and again around September to October.

What to see

  • Hanoi's Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • The Temple of Literature.
  • A street-food evening.
  • Trang An by rowing boat, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The climb to the Mua Cave viewpoint, about 500 steps.

Getting there

Noi Bai airport (HAN) is about 45 minutes from the Old Quarter. Ninh Binh is about 2 hours by road, and our trips include the transfers.

Hanoi & Ninh Binh: common questions

How many days should I spend in Hanoi?

Two days covers the city. Add a day for Ninh Binh and one or two nights for Ha Long Bay.

Can I visit Ninh Binh as a day trip?

Yes, but staying overnight gives you the rice fields at sunrise without the crowds, as on our 3-day trip.
