Angkor Wat: A First-Timer's Guide

The temples of Angkor, just outside Siem Reap in Cambodia, are one of the great sights of Asia. The Angkor Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering hundreds of temples built by the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries.

How many days do you need?

  • 1 day: Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Ta Prohm, at a fast pace.
  • 2 days: the main temples at a comfortable pace, plus sunrise or sunset. Our 2-day Angkor trip works this way.
  • 3 days: add Banteay Srei, Phnom Kulen or the Tonle Sap lake, as on our 3-day trip.

The temples not to miss

  • Angkor Wat: the largest temple, with long carved galleries.
  • The Bayon: in the centre of Angkor Thom, known for its many smiling stone faces.
  • Ta Prohm: huge tree roots grow over the walls.
  • Banteay Srei: a small temple with fine pink sandstone carvings, about an hour north.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Sunrise over Angkor Wat's towers is a classic, and it's popular. Leave your hotel very early to find a spot by the reflecting pools. After sunrise, many visitors go for breakfast, so it's a good time to explore the temple itself.

Tickets

You need an Angkor pass to enter the main temples. It's sold for 1, 3 or 7 days, and our trips list whether it's included. Phnom Kulen needs a separate ticket.

Dress code

Cover your shoulders and knees. The upper level of Angkor Wat is strict about this. Wear comfortable shoes, because there are lots of steep steps.

Best time to go

November to February is dry and the least hot, and it's also the busiest time. March to May is very hot, so plan early starts. From May to October, rain usually comes in the afternoon, and the temples are greener and quieter.

Getting there

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) is about an hour from town, with flights from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and other hubs. Canadians need a visa for Cambodia: you can get an e-visa online or a visa on arrival.

Add more of Cambodia

Pair Angkor with Phnom Penh on our 5-day Cambodia Highlights trip, or add the beaches on the 7-day Temples and Beaches trip.
