Overview

Chiang Rai deserves more than a rushed day trip. This short break splits the drive, gives you the temples at a relaxed pace and adds the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong.

You'll stay the night in Chiang Rai town, with time for the night bazaar.

Itinerary

Day 1Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai

Morning drive north with a hot-springs stop. Afternoon at the White Temple and the Blue Temple, then check in. Evening free for the night bazaar.

Day 2Golden Triangle and back to Chiang Mai

Drive to Sop Ruak for the Golden Triangle viewpoint and a longtail ride on the Mekong. Visit the Hall of Opium, then Baan Dam on the way back to Chiang Mai, arriving early evening.
