Chiang Rai's three modern landmarks are unlike anything else in Thailand: the glittering white Wat Rong Khun, the sapphire-blue Wat Rong Suea Ten, and Baan Dam, an artist's dark museum of wooden houses.

It's a long day from Chiang Mai, so we break the drive at the Mae Kachan hot springs and keep the group small.

1. 07:00Hotel pickup

   Drive north, about 3 hours with a stop.

2. 08:30Mae Kachan hot springs

   Short break at the roadside hot springs.

3. 10:00White Temple

   About 75 minutes at Wat Rong Khun.

5. 12:30Lunch
