Overview

Cambodia's wild east. Start in Phnom Penh, follow the Mekong north to Kratie to see rare Irrawaddy river dolphins from a small boat, then climb into the green hills of Mondulkiri to spend a day with elephants at an ethical sanctuary.

Long drives, but some of the best countryside in the country, and far from the crowds.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Phnom Penh

Private airport pickup. Afternoon at the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, and dinner by the river.

Day 2Up the Mekong to Kratie

Drive north (about 4 to 5 hours) with a stop in Kampong Cham. Late afternoon, a small boat on the Mekong just north of Kratie to watch for Irrawaddy dolphins.

Day 3Into Mondulkiri

Drive into the hills to Sen Monorom (about 3 to 4 hours). Afternoon visit to Bou Sra waterfall and the grasslands at sunset.

Day 4Elephant sanctuary day

A full day at an ethical elephant sanctuary: walk through the forest with a keeper and watch the elephants feed and roam. Lunch in the jungle.

Good to know

Sightings of Irrawaddy dolphins are likely but never guaranteed; they are wild and endangered.
The sanctuary we use does not allow riding or bathing elephants.
Mondulkiri is cooler than the rest of Cambodia; bring a warm layer and closed shoes.
Roads in the east can be slow in the rainy season.
Prices are per person in Canadian dollars. Cambodia widely uses US dollars locally, so bring some small USD notes for tips and drinks.
