Overview
Northern Thailand's classic overnight trek. You walk through forest and farmland in the hills beyond Chiang Mai, sleep in a simple bamboo house in a hill-tribe village, and float back down the river on a bamboo raft.
It's basic, sometimes muddy, and the part of a Thailand trip many travellers remember longest.

Itinerary

Day 1Into the hills
Morning pickup and drive about 90 minutes north, with a stop at a local market. Start trekking after lunch: roughly 4 to 5 hours through forest and fields to the village, where you'll spend the night.

Day 2Waterfall and bamboo rafting
Breakfast in the village, then a shorter walk to a waterfall for a swim. After lunch, raft down the river on bamboo rafts and drive back to Chiang Mai, arriving late afternoon.

Good to know
- You'll need a reasonable level of fitness and proper walking shoes.
- Leave big luggage at your Chiang Mai hotel; bring a small daypack.
- Nights in the hills are cool from November to February.
- Rafting may be replaced with extra walking when the river is too high.
